Alimentación complementaria: las consultas que más inquietan a las familias

LaRio GP, del barrio de Recoleta, arrived at the consultation with the same question that many families ask when the baby reaches six months: what should happen on the plate from now on? I had been looking for pediatric advice that, instead of adding more instructions, could help adults understand the rhythm of the baby. The answer came from Eva Cueto, a pediatrician, who reviewed the most frequent concerns and warned that the abundance of information circulating on social networks often generates more insecurity than certainty.

Los primeros alimentos y la mesa familiar

Until six months, most babies know only breast milk or formula. From that age, complementary feeding introduces new textures, flavors and experiences, along with concerns about choking, digestive reactions and the fear of making a mistake. For Cueto, this period is also an opportunity to expand the variety of the whole family's diet, not merely the baby's.

“Somos espejo. La influencia que ejercen los adultos en la relación de los chicos con los alimentos también teach them how to approach food.”Eva Cueto, pediatra

That observation puts adult habits at the center of the process. When a family prepares new meals, it is not only feeding the baby: it is also reviewing what mothers, fathers and caregivers eat, how they express rejection and what habits they transmit without noticing. The baby's first experiences with food therefore become part of a broader family learning process.

Rejection is one of the most common reasons for consultation. A baby may turn away from a food on the first occasion without that meaning a permanent refusal. Cueto recommends trying the same food up to fifteen times before considering it rejected, and notes that texture matters: some children accept an ingredient better when it is softer or mixed with other preparations.

Los peligros de la sobreinformación

For Cueto, social networks tend to install a single supposedly correct way of feeding a baby. The excess of advice can lead families to believe that every clinical symptom hides a pathology or, at the opposite extreme, to minimize signs that deserve attention. Her recommendation is to seek information based on evidence and not to replace the pediatric consultation with general recommendations that may not apply to each child.

“La consulta pediátrica es el aliado fundamental en esta instancia.”Eva Cueto, pediatra

Regurgitations also bring many families to the office. The specialist explained that this type of episode requires attention to the baby's overall condition, rather than interpretation based only on isolated comments online. The professional evaluation allows to distinguish common digestive events from situations that need further study, without either panicking or ignoring relevant warning signs.

Special formulas, known in Argentina as medicinal milks, are another recurring subject. They are indicated for particular conditions, such as cow's milk protein allergy. In those cases, the protein is highly hydrolyzed, meaning that it is more fragmented to favor tolerance. Choosing an alternative formula requires prior professional evaluation. Law 27.305 includes these milks in the Mandatory Medical Plan.

When I asked Cueto what she wanted families to remember from the conversation, she did not point to a rigid list of foods or schedules. She insisted that each baby develops at a particular pace, that adults should observe and ask questions, and that professional guidance remains essential. As she concluded, the consultation is the fundamental ally in this stage, capable of replacing the noise of general advice with a clearer and more careful path.
